A Conspiracy Culture

     In the Washington Time's editorial piece, "EDITORIAL: A conspiracy culture", the author tells of the various conspiracy theories and rumors of the Sandy Hook shooting, and many other events throughout history.The rumors claim that the shooting was orchestrated by Mossad agents, or by our very own government. The author, however, believes that the theories from the past and present are all just people grasping at strings to avoid the truth of the matter; that evil exists and those things happen.     The author uses pathos to support their claim when they say "The theories thrive in a culture that continues to be dumbed down to avoid acknowledging the unpleasant reality that evil exists. This is basically saying that the theories are created out of fear in order to avoid the truth, the truth that evil exists.The author also uses pathos to support the claim here: "The outlandish claims abound: Kennedy was not killed by a lone gunman; the 1969 moon landing was staged; the government is covering up the existence of UFOs; Elvis still lives; Sasquatch exists; the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks were an inside job by the George W. Bush administration". This is basically saying how completely ridiculous all the conspiracy claims on the government are. It makes it seem even more so when she added Sasquatch and Elvis claims in there.
     I almost agree with this author. I agree that all of these claims could be completely and totally out of desperate imaginations. But at the same time, I have a small part of me that believes the government could be manipulating us in various things. If there really were aliens, I could see why the gov would hold back that info from the public. I could also see the somewhat corrupt government manipulating us, so that we unknowingly vote on something for the wrong reasons. I agree with the the author on the matter of the shooting though, I don't think the government would be so evil to make that up. Or even worse, to send the shooter. But could the Mossad have sent him? Thats something I still wonder. If that was the case, we would have a serious problem.
